| DOCTOR OF
PHILOSOPHY IN HUMANITIES
The program leading to the Ph.D.
in Humanities is designed primarily for individuals
who wish to conduct advanced research and to teach at
the college level, but it is open to qualified candidates
who wish to enhance fully their knowledge and skills.
Course offerings include not only
seminars stressing the interpretation and criticism
of specific works and issues, but also ensembles, studios,
and workshops in which the activity of creation and/or
performance becomes the primary means of learning.
Students seeking a Ph.D. in the Humanities
will normally complete a minimum of sixty semester hours
of course work beyond a master’s degree or its
equivalent, demonstrate advanced proficiency in an approved
foreign language, pass qualifying examinations, and
complete and defend a dissertation.
In addition to meeting the general
University criteria for admission to graduate study,
students earning an M.A. in the Humanities from U.T.
Dallas must obtain the formal endorsement of their portfolio
committee to proceed into the doctoral program.
Students who have completed pertinent
graduate work at other institutions (thirty hours of
humanities courses, language training, and written work
roughly equivalent to the portfolio) may
qualify for a Master of Arts equivalency upon admission
to the graduate program. Students admitted with an M.A.
equivalency must take the required
core course for the Humanities program, HUMA 5300.
Active involvement in the process
of creation and performance is basic to the design of
the Aesthetic Studies area of concentration. Therefore
students working at the Ph.D. level with an emphasis
in Aesthetic Studies are required to take at least one
ensemble/workshop in addition to that taken at the M.A.
level. Students pursuing the Ph.D. with an emphasis
in Aesthetic Studies may submit a creative project as
part of their dissertation.
