Departments
Bioengineering
The department offers MS and PhD degrees in biomedical engineering through a program operated in conjunction with The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and UT Arlington. Emphasizing an interdisciplinary approach, our curriculum includes a rich selection of courses from electrical engineering, computer science, materials science and the life sciences.
Computer Science
One of the largest departments of its kind in the country, UTD’s Department of Computer Science features an internationally recognized faculty, nearly 1,500 students and a 150,000-square-foot building with modern classrooms and state-of-the-art laboratories. Our faculty and students publish more than 350 research papers annually, our faculty includes multiple NSF Career Award winners, and we are one of only a few departments in the U.S. offering BS, MS and PhD degrees in software engineering. Areas of research include cybersecurity, networking, embedded software, programming languages and systems, human language technology, software engineering, intelligent systems and theory.
Electrical Engineering
The Department of Electrical Engineering offers students an opportunity to acquire a solid foundation in the broad areas of electrical engineering and emphasizes advanced study in digital systems, telecommunications, and microelectronics. Students in these programs are given an opportunity to learn to extend their abilities to analyze and solve complex problems and to design new uses of technology to serve today’s society. The engineering programs provide an integrated educational experience directed toward the development of the ability to apply pertinent knowledge to the identification and solution of practical problems in electrical and telecommunications engineering. We also boast an MSEE concentration in the biomedical applications of electrical engineering, and we’re pursuing a growing amount of research in the area.
Materials Science & Engineering
The department offers MS and PhD degrees. The MS degree in materials science and engineering provides intensive preparation for professional practice in modern materials science by those engineers who wish to continue
their education. Courses are offered at a time and location convenient for the student who is employed on a full-time basis. The PhD in materials science and engineering prepares individuals to perform original, cutting-edge research in the broad areas of materials science, including areas such as nano-structured materials; electronic, optical and magnetic materials; bio-mimetic materials; polymeric materials; MEMS materials and systems; organic electronics; and advanced processing of modern materials.
Mechanical Engineering
The department offers BS and MS degrees. The bachelor of science in mechanical engineering prepares graduates to undertake challenging projects requiring knowledge of the fundamentals of mechanical and thermal system
design. The curriculum provides students with the training and education necessary to be able to develop innovative engineering solutions, including new manufacturing and fabrication technologies. The course of study leading
to the MSME degree prepares both recent baccalaureate graduates and experienced mechanical engineers for advanced micro-scale and nano-scale mechanical and thermal design and development.
Programs
Computer Engineering
The field of computer engineering is centered on system-level design, computer architecture and computer applications. This includes circuits and devices, computer systems and engineering software systems. Computer engineering at UT Dallas is a broadly based engineering discipline dealing with the sensing, processing and transmission of information by making extensive use of electrical engineering and computer science principles. The CE program also encourages students and faculty to develop synergies with disciplines outside of engineering such as the life sciences. CE faculty members are actively involved in advanced research and teaching in all major areas of computer engineering, and the school has a large infrastructure of computing and laboratory resources.
Software Engineering
Like the BS degree in computer science, the BS in software engineering is based on a mathematical foundation that includes calculus, linear algebra and discrete mathematics. The two programs also have the same computer science core, including modern programming methodologies, the analysis of algorithms and data structures, and the study of operating systems. But whereas the computer science program continues with courses in advanced data structures, programming languages and automata theory, the software engineering program includes courses in requirements engineering, software validation and testing, and software architecture. There’s also a rich choice of application areas, including digital systems design, computer networks, embedded systems, computer imaging, artificial intelligence and cognitive modeling, and human-computer interaction. The software engineering program prepares students equally well to move on to graduate study or to pursue a career in industry, business or government.
Systems Engineering & Management
Two certificates and a master’s degree are offered. The Certificate in Systems Engineering and the Certificate in Systems Management each require the completion of four courses. A master’s degree is awarded after earning both certificates plus completing just four additional courses. We offer a broad core curriculum, and electives allow concentration in specific vertical industry sectors. Faculty are drawn from both the Jonsson School and the UT Dallas School of Management, with courses provided in an executive education format of weekly four-hour modules offered on Fridays or Saturdays.
Telecommunications Engineering
The focus of the Telecommunications Engineering degree is to provide world class education in modern communications networks and systems. Our graduates are uniquely qualified for outstanding careers in telecommunications, data communications, network architecture, wireless, and optical networking.
Arts & Technology (ATEC)
This interdisciplinary program explores the interaction between the arts and technology, with an emphasis on the interplay of the visual arts, music, video and narrative with new media that have emerged in recent years. The core knowledge in this program draws from the convergence of research in the humanities, the creative and performing arts, visual communications design, computer science and engineering. Graduates are prepared for a wide range of careers that demand the ability to fuse images, verbal communication, creative thinking and technological expertise.
