				<description><![CDATA[ <img src='http://www.utdallas.edu/news/imgs/photos/vidyasagar-mathumatu-thumbnail-2010-09.jpg' class='img-left' alt='Dr. Vidyasagar' /> A UT Dallas interdisciplinary researcher has launched a human genome  analysis project intended to create a mathematical model that improves  the efficacy of cancer drugs while reducing their manufacturing costs by  as much as 30 percent. A three-year, $305,000 grant from the National  Science Foundation will fund Dr.  Mathukumalli "Sagar" Vidyasagar's development of a new method for  detecting DNA sequence similarities. ]]></description>

Researcher  Yves Chabal received the Tech Titan Tech Innovator award for work that  promises to greatly improve semiconductor devices' performance in health  care and solar power applications. And MicroTransponder, a  biotechnology firm sponsored by The Institute for Innovation  and Entrepreneurship at UT Dallas, won the Tech  Titan Emerging Company Award. ]]></description>

Collaborators at Purdue University will  receive about half that funding, with the balance coming to Dr. Murat  Kantarcioglu at UT Dallas. The larger of the two grants deals with  the increasingly common practice of cross-matching datasets to support  various activities involving intelligence, counterterrorism, forensics  and disease control. ]]></description>

The UT  Dallas alumna joined five other long-distance swimmers in a relay crossing of Scotland's fabled Loch Ness to raise money for the Afghan  Mother and Child Rescue charity. The six women traversed the 23-mile length of the lake in 13 hours and 23  minutes.  ]]></description>
